Celebrate Dr Seuss on March 2nd

Tuesday is the 106Th birthday of Dr. Seuss, but NEA RI is celebrating this Saturday at Warwick Mall from 10 until 4 PM. There will be free books, guest readers, and activities for children.

On Tuesday Charlestown Elementary students will celebrate his birthday by reading his books, making rhyming words, and using their imaginations. This year along with all of our old favorites, like The Cat in the Hat, we will be reading Horton Hears the Who. Horton teaches us many lessons about kindness, friendship, and doing what we believe, no matter how difficult. Horton says it best in the story—"A person's a person, no matter how small."

Read Across America challenges every parent to read with a child on this special day. Listed below are sites with more Dr. Seuss activities, but remember the most important thing is to share a special Dr Seuss book with your child!!

Read for the Record

On Thursday, October 8Th, Charlestown Elementary School will join schools and community groups all over the country reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. Reading for the Record will attempt to establish a new record for people reading the same children's book. This is our fourth year participating in this event which supports children's literacy, especially for at risk pre-schoolers who live without books in their homes.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a book that charms and intrigues children of all ages while giving teachers and parents ample opportunities to discuss nutrition and individual needs.

Summer Reading Assembly

On Thursday, September 24th, Charlestown Elementary celebrated all of the students who particpated in the summer reading program at a school assembly. These students returned reading logs and projects for books that they read during the summer , either alone or with their parents. After the assembly, the children selected 2 new books to read from donations by our PTO and the Verizon Corporation. Some of the students also participated in the summer fitness program and math summer programs.

We would like to salute all the parents who encouraged, assisted, or gently prodded their children to read over the warm, lazy days of summer. Students who read over the summer are more likely to maintain their reading skills and research has shown that students who fail to read over the summer actually may lose some skills.

So thank you for supporting your children and literacy.

Chariho Student Athletes Visit for Reading Week

Our special thanks to the student athletes from Chariho High School for visiting our school during reading week. Children and teachers were thrilled by the visit. A special appearance by the Charger, the high school mascot, added to the excitement.

Vocabulary word- artificial

Students in many classes showed creativity and their new word knowledge as they wore their "vocabulary hats" during the day.

Kicking Off Reading Week

Monday afternoon the children enjoyed a visit by URI's Rhody Ram to kick off Reading Week. The Ram visited each class and helped remind students that reading at home is an important part of being a good reader.
Then three members of the URI Women's Volleyball team read books by Eric Carle with some of our classes.

On Friday, student athletes from Chariho High School will visit Charlestown School to read stories and talk with the children.

So please remember ---- Rah, Rah, Rah---Read at Home!

Dr. Seuss' Birthday

On Monday, March 2, 2009, we'll celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday at Charlestown Elementary School. Please have children wear red and white that day and bring their favorite Dr Seuss book.

The NEA Read Across America sponsors activities across the country. Before vacation the children in Charlestown collected 'gently used' children books to be donated to other children in need through a NEA program.

We invite our parents to join us in celebrating by taking the time to read with a child on March 2nd. Each family that reads that day will receive a special NEA certificate. So grab your favorite Dr Seuss book and join the fun and read!

Welcome to reading at Charlestown Elementary School. Learning to read is one of the biggest challenges of young students. Reading every day at home is an important part of a child's success.

In February we celebrate Groundhog's Day, Valentine's Day, President's Day, and Black History Month. Books can open the doors to adventures, so curl up and read on a cold winter's day.
